Chapter Fourteen

Deacon

Fucked. Everything about my life was fucked. I had a motorcycle club wanting to meet with me, had Alder’s little sister on my mind in the naughtiest of ways, and had a crick in my back and neck from sleeping in the cab of my truck. I had woken up in a foul mood and was likely to stay in it all day. Mostly because of how my night had been upended twice over, both times due to Lainie. Which meant dealing with Alder this morning was going to be loads of fun.

I owed that man my life ten times over, and fucking his little sister was not the way to pay him back.

But Lainie…Elaine.

“I need some fucking coffee,” I mumbled to myself as I parked in Alder’s driveway, hoping like hell Shye was about to be her usual hostess self and offer me some when she saw me. Hell, at that point, I was willing to ring the doorbell and ask for some. It had been a long night.

A long night with Lainie in my ear for most of it, either chatting or simply breathing. Second-best night of my adult life, for sure. I hadn’t been kidding her when I’d said I’d need to put a ring on her finger for Alder to accept us, though. I wasn’t even sure that would be enough for the man. He still saw her as a child. Not that marrying the woman was a realistic option—Alder would still kick my ass, and she’d likely run the second I brought it up as a possibility. She’d accepted me joking about it, but I had a feeling if I got serious…

If I truly asked her…

She’d be gone.

And Alder would still be mad at me.

My entire world was one large dilemma.

“Seriously,” I huffed as I stepped out of the truck. “Need coffee.”

“Deacon?” The angel herself had opened the door to the house and stood leaning halfway onto the porch. She looked a little tired and pale but still had a big smile on her face. “I’ve got a fresh pot of coffee on if you’d like a cup.”

Praise be. “You are a queen among peasants, and I will accept that coffee with much gratitude.”

Shye giggled and waved me inside. I followed her through the door, sticking to the landing by the door to give the woman some space. She really did seem pale, the skin under her eyes almost blue-toned.

“You good, Shye? Everything okay here?”

Shye lifted her shoulders in a delicate shrug. “Of course. Everything’s fine.”

Fine. I truly hated when women used that word. It was a definite sign that things were not in any way fine.

“You let me know if you need help keeping Alder in line. I’m not afraid to go head-to-head with the jackass.”

“Who’s a jackass?” Alder himself walked down the stairs, looking fresh and recently showered. “Morning, Deac.”

“Morning. Your lovely bride was just making me a cup of coffee.”

His face twisted, concern appearing. “You sure you’re—”

“I’m fine.” Shye gave him a stiff smile, relaxing it as she turned to me.
